慈濟建築，來自佛教、來自《妙法蓮華經》的啟發。慈濟的建築外觀，如出家人的灰色僧袍。洗石子的分割線是條布的縫合線，衣服的顏色提醒出家人減少貪欲，建築的外觀提醒慈濟人儉樸。
人字屋頂是合字屋頂、是出世「六和敬」、是入世「家和萬事興」的和合期待。「三寶」位置至高。「靜思堂」的回字平面，不依中國傳統的佛寺格局，而是因應時代、因應社區、因應「菩薩訓練場」需要的「內修外行」格局。內回講堂的精神空間，不是傳統佛龕，是「人間佛教」縮影的人間舞臺，及主牆上的「宇宙大覺者」。
慈濟建築大海中有很多重要的針，講者試著「大海撈針」，最重要的針：是菩薩的心、行，是「慈」悲為懷「濟」世救人，是用修行的心行善助人——慈濟建築彰顯了這一個核心的重要。
講者深入撈出慈濟建築的針，數根或一根的核心。廣泛調查，盡可能搜集所有87國的建築做為基礎，整理分析以建築圖配置、平面、大樣，立面、剖面思考模式瞭解。讓建築自然、「不證自明」的歸納出慈濟建築屬於宗教精神的這一塊；如佛所言：一切眾生本來就有與佛同等的智慧德相。
建築可以不是東西，供人「諸悪皆作」；建築可以是商品，唯利是圖；建築可以是產品，只供人遮風蔽雨；建築可以是作品，像建築大師們的藝術傑作；建築可以是法品，具人文教化、宗教精神、且供人「眾善奉行」——慈濟建築的美學，就在這裡！

Tzu Chi architecture is inspired by Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra). Its exterior resembles the gray robes of monastics. The segmented lines of the exposed aggregate concrete are like the seams of cloth. The color of the robe reminds monastics to reduce greed, while the architectural appearance reminds Tzu Chi members to live simply.
The gable roof symbolizes harmony: it represents the monastic principle of the “Six Harmonies” and, in the secular world, the aspiration of “family harmony brings prosperity.” The position of the “Three Treasures” is set at the highest point. The square layout of the Jing Si Hall does not follow the traditional Chinese temple structure; rather, it responds to the needs of the times, the community, and the “Bodhisattva training ground,” embodying a structure of “inner cultivation and outward practice.” The inner hall serves as a spiritual space—not a traditional shrine, but a stage that reflects Humanistic Buddhism, featuring the “Awakened One of the Universe” on its main wall.
Within the vast ocean of Tzu Chi architecture lie many “needles” of significance. The speaker attempts to “search for needles in the sea” to identify the most essential one: the Bodhisattva is mindset and actions—embracing compassion (“ci”) and relieving suffering (“ji”), practicing goodness with a cultivated heart. Tzu Chi architecture manifests this core essence.
Through in-depth exploration, the speaker identifies several key “needles” at the core of Tzu Chi architecture. Based on extensive research, including buildings across 87 countries, the study analyzes site plans, layouts, details, elevations, and sections. From this, it naturally and self-evidently reveals that Tzu Chi architecture belongs to the realm of religious spirit. As the Buddha taught, all beings inherently possess wisdom and virtue equal to that of the Buddha.
Architecture can be mere objects that facilitate wrongdoing; it can be commodities driven solely by profit; it can be products providing only shelter; it can be works of art like masterpieces of great architects; or it can be Dharma objects—imbued with humanistic education, religious spirit, and encouraging the practice of all good deeds. The aesthetics of Tzu Chi architecture lie precisely here.
