We have a Yi-De Mom who spent more than half of her lifetime in Tzu Chi University, her name is Zhi-Hui, and the meaning of "Zhi Hui" in Chinese is "Wisdom". She is also a beloved figure within the vegetarian community, renowned for her warmth and dedication. At the age of 85, she has spent 47 years sharing her expertise in vegetarian cooking, passing down her wisdom and meticulous approach to younger generations with gentle care.
Zhi-Hui Mom firmly believes that vegetarian cuisine need not be complicated or adhere to rigid standards. With sincerity and ease, one can create delicious meals that are uniquely their own. Rooted in the use of whole foods, she skillfully incorporates fresh fruits and vegetables into her dishes, continuously learning and adapting to make vegetarianism a vibrant and accessible lifestyle choice. Even in her eighties, she remains highly sought after by communities across Taiwan, using her culinary creations to guide more people into the world of vegetarian living.
This lecture will focus on the art of making Onigiri. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the entire handmade process—from preparing the rice, selecting ingredients, to the final shaping. Though seemingly simple, each onigiri embodies a sense of groundedness and warmth, inviting participants to rediscover mindfulness in daily life and rekindle their love for living.
This love has been evident in Zhi-Hui Mom over 35 years of service as a Tzu Chi volunteer, traveling monthly to Hualien to prepare meals with maternal care that leave lasting memories in the hearts and minds of students in TCU. On this occasion, she will also share stories from this journey of love.
Join us in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere to explore the connection between cooking and life, and to experience how vegetarianism can bring hope and vitality into our lives.
No prior cooking experience is required; this event is open to all faculty, staff, and students interested in food culture and humanitarian care. We sincerely invite everyone to participate in this hands-on experience and discover the warmth of vegetarian cuisine for themselves.
