•Abstract: Body color expression in human is related to colors of skin, eyes and hair. The skin pigmentation is thought to prevent ultraviolet (UV) damage and also cause the sunburn, black stain, melanoma and sometime white spotting or vitiligo. Recently, white spot symptom by a cosmetic chemical, Rhododenol that was thought to suppress the melanin production and have an effect to prevent a stain or freckles, was noticed in the wide area. In animals, body color effects on camouflage, recognition of the same species, appeal to the sexual partner and threat to a natural enemy, etc. For them, body color expression is the very important phenotype in their living strategy. From these facts, body color expression, that is, pigment production is one of the attractive research subjects. So far, over 200 genes have been suggested to be involve in the pigment-producing system. Also, environmental factors like UV, chemicals and hormones greatly influence to the system. In this talk, the outline of the pigment-producing mechanism will be explained and our research in chicken to find out a responsible gene for a mutation (Fibromelanosis, Fm) will be introduced. I hope all of the audience will enjoy the story on this attractive pigment-producing mechanism.
