Synopsis:
Current pharmacological treatments administered to patients are mainly based on population-based pharmacokinetic profiling. As such, the poor responders to certain medications require careful titration of dosage regimens. There is still a small percentage of patients who do not respond to current drug therapies or suffers from the consequences of undesirable effects caused by drugs. While we are not there yet, I will share my laboratory’s efforts in combining medicinal chemistry, genetics, electrophysiology and pharmacology towards tailoring drug treatment to patients suffering from neurological illnesses and degeneration. Specifically, I will illustrate our investigations through targeting the regulation of glutamate receptor and phospholipase A2 activities.
To understand pathophysiological alterations cased by neurological illnesses and degeneration, one has to first have an appreciation of the normal brain structures. I will give a glimpse on our collaborative effort towards generating the first mammalian brain cytoarchitecture.
